Jordanian energy minister visits Eesti Energia

This week, Eesti Energia will be visited by Jordan's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Khalid Irani and director of the Jordanian resources board Dr. Maher Hijazin accompanied by representatives of key national authorities and companies.

During the visit scheduled for 1-2 September, the minister will familiarize himself with production of shale oil at Eesti Energia and with the Enefit-280 shale oil plant to be established, and will visit other companies in the Eesti Energia Group, mines, power plants and technology industries.

On the second day of the visit, the Jordanian energy minister will meet Prime Minster Andrus Ansip and Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Juhan Parts.

This May, Eesti Energia signed a concession agreement with the Jordanian government for utilization of the resources in the Attarat Um Ghudrani oil shale deposit. The 38 km2 area in the use of Eesti Energia holds an estimated over 2 billion tons of oil shale and it will be possible to expand the area under certain conditions, placing about 4 billion tons of oil shale at Eesti Energia's disposal. The Attarat Um Ghudrani oil shale deposit is located in the central part of Jordan and is the largest of the places oil shale is found in Jordan – the oil shale reserves are estimated at 25 billion tonnes.

Since the concession agreement was signed, Eesti Energia has been conducting additional geological and hydrogeological investigations in the deposit; oil shale refining technology is also being tested and developed and an environmental impact assessment is taking place.

Eesti Energia has two parallel development projects on-going in Jordan – an oil plant with about a 38,000 barrel a day output and an oil shale power plant rated at up to 900 MW.

The Kingdom of Jordan is among the world's top five countries in terms of oil shale and has total oil shale resources of 30-80 billion tonnes. The area of Jordan is 92,300 square kilometres, and the country has a population of 6.6 million.
