Interruptions in the operation of Estlink’s submarine cable

10.01.2007

Failures in the distribution network owned by Fortum in Finland have resulted in interruptions in the operation of Estlink’s submarine cable

The accident at the Espoo substation in Finland, which occurred yesterday, on 9 January, at 21.27, resulted in the temporary interruption of the operations of Estlink’s submarine cable. Because of a strong wind a medium voltage line switched off in Espoo’s region, which ensures the self-consumption of Estlink’s converter substation. Estlink’s operations were restored at 2.00, but Estlink’s operations were again interrupted today at 10.31 for the same reasons. Estlink’s operations were restored at 14.00.

The construction of Estlink’s marine cable, between the Baltic States and Finland, was completed at the beginning of December 2006, and the cable launched its commercial activities on 4 January 2007. The participants in Estlink’s cable project are Eesti Energia, Latvenergo and Lietuvos Energija from the Baltic States, and Pohjolan Voima and Helsingin Energia from Finland.
